Sam Pooley Stride is a self-taught painter who came to it late, having worked through a range of media to discover a form of communication that truly challenged and moves her. Often starting with a common theme, emotion or concept that is then developed into a collection of abstracted work.

She has an intuitive style, experimenting with medium to create texture and depth. Working as both an emotional response to her surroundings and an attempt to escape into the use of raw materials and the painting itself. Working on paper, wood panels and canvas, the paintings veer from high-intensity colour to minimalist monochromes.

Sam's most recent work continues to narrate the highs and lows of the relationship between creating and her own evolution. These expressionist paintings explore the notion of overwhelm that so many of us are experiencing in contemporary life, with the need to reconnect with nature and in turn back to herself. Having discovered a confidence in oils, she has used a combination of materials. Her aim is for the natural palette to evoke a sense of calm within the chaos of the energetic colours and gestures.
