The Painting Mark in conversation with Susannah, ahead of releasing the new collection, and a magical insight into the unique process of how she paints.
How do you relate to the landscape and what makes you want to recreate it?
I see the landscape as unfolding paintings- I am most comfortable in rural open landscape- and I love the sea when it is stormy.
Can you explain your own Plein Air painting process and how does it make you feel?
I walk until I find a view that grabs my interest-I mess about with shapes and composition, then work quickly enough to hold what first arrested my attention.
I use a small box on a tripod- and work on board with oil paint.
I can get so absorbed that I will completely forget time.
What is your connection to Cornwall?
I have been to Cornwall most years since I was a teenager- it is familiar yet there is always more to explore - and late summer is beautiful.
Can you describe Indian Summer in your own 3 words?
Warm, glowing light
